In a December 14th interview, Allardyce, a veteran mentor of English soccer, commented on the Three Lions' coaching search. He made it clear that he is "firmly against" any proposal to hire a new foreign coach. He is convinced that the English soccer community does not intend to let the current coach Southgate go.
Allardyce elaborated further, "Never, it's absolutely impossible. We have a plethora of good domestic coaches and we are capable of picking the best person for the job. While some people have set off a debate over the fact that the women's soccer team won the title under a Dutch coach, I don't think it would have been beneficial to the development of our national soccer if our homegrown coach had not been chosen, considering the conditions that existed."
Speaking about Southgate, Allardyce said, "When you're in a lot of battles, the pressure on you increases. When you are eager to experience a new life and don't want to be under constant pressure, especially in a major tournament, your role-playing time becomes limited. It all depends on how successful you are and how well the team performs. I believe that with the current strength of the squad, Southgate is well placed to lead England to win the Euros in 2024."
He went on to say, "I'm sure the FA won't let him leave, but I personally don't think so."
