I can't believe this is happening. My protégé, Li Tie, is a mature and understanding kid, quiet in the team but hardworking on the training ground. He respects me, gives his best on the field, and walks on thin ice at every tournament.

Frankly speaking, the fact that Chinese players have made it to the World Cup stems from the rigorous youth training they have received, coupled with the increased competition in professional soccer and even the opportunity to play overseas. Their vision, confidence and awareness all took a leap forward, and it was the special training model of the Jianlibao team that was the source of the team's newfound strength. Under the circumstances, this injected fresh blood into Chinese soccer.

When I was in charge of the Chinese men's soccer team, the players sought my favor, expecting to be selected for the national team. My answer was: not I do not choose, the first choice is not my sole discretion, the second choice because of the lack of strength, the selection is not beneficial, it is a waste of space.

Li Tie once said that he dreamed of becoming a coach and leading his team to the World Cup, but he did the opposite. Perhaps he failed to resist the great temptation. I can understand that! He has a limited educational background, he is not good with words, and it is normal for his heart to fluctuate! But if he makes a mistake, he must bear all the consequences! I still expect him to reflect on his mistakes, change his ways and start afresh.

So far, I still hold the view. Local coaches may not be suitable to coach the national team. At least at this stage, this is not a question of ability, but simply because soccer development should not be rushed. In China, the difficulty of mastering the basics also emphasizes its importance. Local coaches are under far more pressure and intervention than foreign coaches like me, and even "veterans" like me have felt overwhelmed, let alone them. You have to realize that such a position is enough to destroy one's will.
