On August 2, Louisville Athletic Football Club announced a major transfer on their official channels: they successfully signed former Paris Saint-Germain player Wang Frost from Lyon Times Football Club. With the number of seats for the 2026 FIFA World Cup increasing to 48, the Asian qualifiers will also produce eight direct qualification spots and one intercontinental play-off spot. The third round of qualifying, once known as the Round of 12, will be upgraded to a Round of 18. The 18 teams will be divided into three groups of six teams each to play a home-and-away round-robin tournament, with the top two teams from each group totaling six teams advancing directly to the World Cup.
