
On June 20, news spread throughout the international soccer world that legendary Uruguayan center back Robert Lima, on the eve of his 49th birthday, had passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest during a friendly match. Before the sad news could subside, his ex-wife, Veronica Sánchez Lane, mother of his two children, also passed away a few hours later due to health problems, two tragedies that came as a bolt from the blue.
On that day, Robert Lima suddenly collapsed on the pitch, and his close friends around him immediately performed CPR, but in the end, there was nothing they could do to bring him back. This scene, which took place on the last day of his life, also made the Uruguayan Football Association (AUT), where he was born, decide to observe a minute of silence as a sign of mourning at all matches that week.
Robert Lima has had a storied career, born in Melo, Uruguay, on June 18, 1978, and standing 187cm tall, he started out as a center back. 1993 saw him join Uruguayan giants Penarol, and in 2003 he moved to Harbin Langer in the First Division before returning to Uruguay due to unpaid wages at the club. 2005 saw him once again embark on a journey to China, joining Shanghai Jiu Cheng in the First Division, and a season later moving to Uruguayan side Liverpool. Shanghai Jiu Cheng, and moved to Liverpool in Uruguay one season later.
