In a Sept. 12 interview, Manchester City midfielder Core Rodri opened up to ESPN about his vision for the Ballon d'Or and revealed that the Spanish soccer world is on track to return to glory after 64 years.
Rodri confessed in the interview, "Yes, winning the Ballon d'Or has always been a dream in my heart. Some people questioned why it wasn't Iniesta or Xavi."
"I totally agree with that sentiment. They are undoubtedly legends of their time, the best in the history of soccer, but they were in the golden age of Melo."
"To win the Ballon d'Or would be an honor for me and a source of pride for our country. Having a Spanish player who can win the Ballon d'Or would make everyone proud."
"But the beauty of soccer is that great players emerge. I think Spain deserves a chance to do the same, because we have produced a number of great players who have written brilliant chapters for their clubs and national teams."
"Some people think my biggest rival is Vinicius. I have a lot of respect for the player and think he is very good. To be at the center of the discussion makes me proud of my efforts. Frankly, there are many players who deserve this award, so let's see what happens."
"But imagine when I walk down the street and people are telling me 'you're going to win the Ballon d'Or', it means to me that I'm on top of my game. I think it's overwhelming that people have faith in me that I can be the best player in the world. It's a dream I never dared to think about."
"When I'm in this position, I look back on the years of hard work, the trust of the crowd and every bit of support, and I realize how hard-earned the opportunity to win this award and reach these heights has been."
