The Olympic event came to a close on Aug. 11, with the U.S. team winning medals in the three major sports and dominating the gold medal standings.

The U.S. men's basketball team pocketed the gold medal with a spectacular dunk to beat the French men's basketball team, 98-87.

And the men's U.S. Olympic team met its Waterloo in the quarterfinals, where a 0-4 scoreline kept them out of the Elite Eight.

In volleyball, the U.S. men's volleyball team gleamed with a bronze medal in a clean 3-0 victory over the Italian men's volleyball team.

In women's basketball, the U.S. Women's Basketball team came within one point of the gold medal game, narrowly defeating the French Women's Basketball team 67-66 to reach the gold medal.

In women's soccer, the U.S. women's soccer team defended its title with a narrow 1-0 win over Brazil.

However, the U.S. women's volleyball team had to settle for the silver medal after going 0-3 against Italy in the gold medal game.
