On a quiet Sunday (1) in Guinea, a soccer match in Nzérékoréko - West Africa's second largest city - turned into a disaster. Reports indicate that 100 live lives came to an abrupt end during the match, leaving a mountain of bodies in hospitals and morgues.
Images on the internet revealed a chaotic scene, with bodies littering the streets. According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the clash was triggered by a controversial refereeing decision, enraging fans who stormed the stadium to express their displeasure, throwing stones at the opposing team. Police then intervened, releasing tear gas to disperse the crowd, however, tragedy struck as the crowd surged towards the exits, stepping on people.
Local medical personnel described piles of bodies in the hospital, corridors with corpses on the floor, and morgues with nowhere to put them. It is reported that the event was meant to be a tribute to junta leader Dumbuya, who rose to power in a coup in September 2021 and is now actively preparing for the presidential election and forming a political coalition, hence the frequency of such events.
