It was a sleepless night, and in the early hours of the 11th, after the 0-0 match between Cameroon and Zimbabwe, Onana's figure took center stage. His departure was like a huge carnival, the stadium was surrounded by thousands of fanatical fans, even the team bus could not stop. He, then, drove to the airport, escorted by police cars, in a spectacular scene.
The match was held in Uganda, the land of Manchester United, where a local United fan site is said to have more than 600,000 followers. In this Group J match, Onana was not only the heart of Cameroon's defense, but also a hero to the fans. At the end of the match, a frenzy erupted in the waiting crowd over Onana's presence. Although the police discouraged fans from blocking the bus, the passionate fans chose another way, driving their private cars straight to the airport.
Onana conceded five goals in his last two games in the Premier League, but returned to the national team with a solid performance. Cameroon first beat Namibia 1-0 and then in the Battle of Zimbabwe, Onana proved his mettle once again with a 180-minute shutout, a rarity on the international stage.
