An unfavorable chain of events followed an unexpected 0-1 defeat for Italy. Notably, the team's star left back Federico Di Marco suffered an unfortunate calf sprain and is feared to miss the crucial Group B group stage showdown against Croatia in the early hours of Tuesday morning. According to Football Italia, coach Spalletti has already prepared a strategy to deal with the situation, and plans to move defensive stalwart Karakoli, who had an unfortunate goal in the last round of the match, to the left back position to fill the vacancy of Federico Di Marco.

Federico Di Marco had a solid group stage for this year's European national team, starting two consecutive games. Despite remaining present for the entire match against Spain, he found himself injured after the game. The Italian FA have since indicated that they are keeping a close eye on the Inter Milan star's health, and Football Italia have revealed that Spalletti have devised a number of measures to deal with Federico Di Marco's absence, including a temporary move for Caracoli at left-back.

Karakoli has mainly played in the left wing position since his debut at the age of 22. After joining Bologna last season, his position changed slightly, but that hasn't made him a stranger to the left wing position. Although the Italian team still has a number of players who can play on the left flank such as Damien and Andrea Gambiasu, Spalletti may send Caracoli to the left flank in order to strengthen the team's defense, and this decision may depend on the appearance of either Buon Giorno or Gianlucavinceni.
