The Argentine soccer legend known as the "King of the Ball", Máez, is once again suffering from an injury. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) officially announced on Tuesday (19th) that the FC Internacional Mayami striker will not be able to play in the team's upcoming matches due to a tendon injury in his thigh, thus missing the two warm-up matches in the United States that were scheduled to be held on Saturday (23rd).
Mez, 36, has missed two recent USL matches in a row due to injury, but in one of the matches in the Central Champions League, he only played 50 minutes but still showed great individual ability and managed to score a goal. In an official statement, the Argentinean Football Association (AFA) noted, "The national team captain, Mez, has suffered a minor injury to his right thigh and will not participate in the two warm-up matches held in the United States."
According to ESPN, Mez is still expected to play an active role in the national team's rehab and is aiming to make his comeback in the last eight of the Chinese Champions League early next month. It's worth noting that Argentina already has striker Paulo Dibana and midfielder Esquipelasos out of the tournament with injuries.
The warm-up matches planned for this month in Hangzhou and Beijing, China, did not take place. As a result of the events in Hong Kong, Argentina's visit to China was forced to be canceled and the team has instead traveled to the United States for training. They will face El Salvador this Saturday and Costa Rica next Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming US National Cup in the summer.
