The first-ever Mays, who was unable to make it to the Hong Kong showdown against Internacional Maia Mi this month, has been the subject of a "Mays fiasco". After days of festering controversy, the Argentine soccer superstar released a 2-minute, 20-second video via his official microblogging site to explain his absence from the Hong Kong tournament. In the video, he insisted that he was unable to compete due to "inflammation of the adductor muscle" and revealed that he had done his best in training the day before, emphasizing that his absence was not due to other factors.

In a post on Twitter, Meis wrote with gratitude, "I wish you all a happy year of the dragon! I would like to clear up some misunderstandings and express my sincere gratitude once again to all of you who have traveled so far to support me and my team. Your shouts, signs and love are all deeply cherished by me. A warm hug to all of you!"

In the video, Mays also clarified other speculations about his absence, emphasizing that he has visited China several times and would not give up if he could not compete for other reasons, even if he faced distant Japan.

On why he missed the race, Mays explained that he had felt unwell during the training in Saudi Arabia and had developed inflammation of the adductor muscle, which was a very high risk of injury. He did his best during the training on the day before the Hong Kong match. As for the brief comeback later in Japan, it was due to the fact that the situation had improved.
