The final of the passionate African Cup of Nations has been revealed! At the crack of dawn on Thursday (8), two heated matches were in full swing. Cote d'Ivoire, the hosts, narrowly beat the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 1-0, while Nigeria beat South Africa 12-11 in a dramatic penalty shootout. These two strong teams met in the group stage when Nigeria won 1-0.
Nigeria and South Africa were evenly matched, with neither side scoring at the end of the half. However, in the 67th minute, Nigeria's Vytor Osungham gave his team the lead through a penalty kick. Just as the game was coming to an end, a South African attack was fouled in the penalty area, however the referee did not give any indication. Nigeria then launched a counter-attack, with Vitor Ossenhan scoring again and seemingly sealing the win. However, the VAR system took a dramatic turn when it retraced the foul on South Africa's attack and not only disallowed Vitor Ossenhan's goal, but also awarded South Africa a penalty, which Mogona converted to bring the score to 1-1.
