The EFL Cup is in full swing this evening, and a one-man show is about to take place, as Wigan will challenge last year's runners-up, Manchester United, on their home turf. Although Wigan are currently struggling in the middle and lower reaches of the English League One, their attacking power is a bit insufficient, and they will inevitably adopt a defensive stance against the strongest opponent. On the other hand, Man U's side, their performance fluctuates and is plagued by serious injuries, coupled with the inconsistency of the team in the league under the EFL Cup's customary rules, Wigan still have a chance to make a comeback after the half-time draw. (The match will be broadcast live on myTV SUPER at 4:15am on Tuesday.)

Wigan used to be the "Immortals" of the Premier League, always relegated and even beat Manchester City to win the EFL Cup in 2013. However, the team has been declining since then and has now dropped to 18th place in the English League One, which is saddening. The current coach, Maroney, was once the team's EFL Cup champion, but so far, the team's record has been mediocre, with only 1 win, 2 draws and 3 losses in the last 6 matches, with very few goals scored. The defense has been rock solid, but the offense is not good enough.

Manchester United's performance this season is like a roller coaster, just when you think the team is about to sink, it suddenly surprises you; but when you have hope for it, you are often disappointed again. For example, 4 consecutive matches without a win, but suddenly beat Aston Villa 3-2 with great passion, but then lost to Nottingham Forest with the same score, which is unpredictable.

United's squad is riddled with injuries, with a number of players such as Harry Marcus, Lauki Schurr, Eden Aliffe, Mason Mount and many others injured, even as goalkeeper Onana deferred his call-up to the Cameroonian national team for the NCAA tournament, and is expected to miss out on the league battle with Tottenham Hotspur. The campaign is expected to be led by a number of starters such as Jonny Evans, Kirsten Alichen and Rashford, while juniors such as Maneo and Ghanwala are also expected to get a chance to play.
