Since the adoption of VAR technology in soccer, the number of controversies over penalties has increased rather than decreased. However, FIFA is planning to deepen the powers of VAR, and once implemented, even penalties and corner kicks will come under its supervision. Once implemented, the length of matches will inevitably be extended, a change that has been widely questioned.
FIFA's VAR panel will meet in London on Tuesday (28) to discuss the expansion of VAR's remit, according to The Times. Currently, VAR can only intervene in "decisive major decisions" such as goals, red cards and penalties. If its remit is expanded, corners, penalties and the "second yellow card" will also be included in the scope of review. However, this proposal will not be implemented immediately and will not be formally adopted until at least the annual general meeting in March next year.
