With the Premier League on the line, this Sunday's Manchester City Derby is definitely the highlight and I'm looking forward to what I'm sure will be an exciting matchup.
Looking back at last week, United's off-field fiasco had a profound effect on the team and unfortunately we also saw the passing of the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton. His passing undoubtedly brought great sadness to the club, but in the week of his death, the team showed great respect and professionalism, and winning two consecutive matches was a fitting tribute to the legend.
Although United's recent performances haven't been great, this derby may be just the ticket for them. Thinking back to the match against Arsenal earlier in the season, United showed the power of counter-attacking, and this match could very well be a repeat of that scenario. City will undoubtedly dominate the field for the majority of the game, which will force United to play a more conservative defense and then wait for the opportunity to counterattack. United, with their deadly strikers, are fully capable of utilizing this tactic.
This is a game where United are seen as challengers, and the easing of pressure may galvanize them. Kasmiru was exceptional in last season's game and his defensive awareness is vital. Tannhäuser has a plethora of options for a midfield partner, from McTonmini to Sufn-Rabert, each of which could be a possible partner for Kasmiru. Personally, I'd prefer McTomini, who is full of energy and can break and attack at the same time, and will be vital for United in both attack and defense.
For City, the UEFA Cup win allowed them to rotate their squad, with players like Phil Cotton and Stones expected to start the game. The only absentee is Venlur Ejenji, while long-time injury victim Chivan Dibny is also unavailable. Nonetheless, City remain strong.
The return of Stones is a great boon to City, and his midfield organization will be a nightmare for United. If United choose to press, Stones will be able to tear through the defense easily; if United contract their defense, City will be able to take full control in the midfield. This is a huge challenge for Tannhäuser, who needs to make sure the starting lineup adapts to his tactics.
As for City's center forward Aynin Chalant, he is still in great form, scoring 11 goals in 14 games. He shone in last season's Man City Derby and will no doubt give his all in this clash, looking for his opponent's weaknesses.
