The Premier League has been riddled with injuries this season and it is thought that up to a hundred players will be unavailable due to injury this weekend. There are many suggestions that the high density of games played by players is the main reason for the increase in injuries. Giovanni Gambrelli, the Portsmouth manager, has proposed a 'cap on appearances' system, which would see each player make a maximum of 60 appearances per season.

Injury-plagued Giobertini lamented at the end of his career: "As a top player, there are too many matches for clubs and the national team, and I think it's necessary to set a maximum number of matches. It's not up to me to decide whether to play 60 or 65 matches, of course players should give their best, but 60 matches in a season is too much. Setting a cap on the number of matches played will encourage clubs and national team coaches to arrange the players' playing time more rationally."
