Recently, the British media broke the news that Premier League powerhouse Westham suffered a hammer blow in the transfer market. Originally, they had their eye on Manchester United's defensive stalwart Harry Magooni, but ultimately had to give up the deal because of a dispute over a compensation payment.

It is reported that the 30-year-old England international could not come to terms with United over compensation and preferred to stay at United for two more years waiting for his contract to expire rather than accepting a pay cut to leave the club. On United's side, they had originally agreed to transfer Magouni to the London side for 30 million pounds (about HK$300 million).

However, if Magouni joins Westham, his weekly salary will be reduced to £120,000 from £190,000 now. In order to facilitate the deal, United were willing to compensate Magouni for the loss of £6 million in salary. However, Magouni made a demand for compensation of up to £15 million, which brought the negotiations to a standstill. Eventually, Westham decided not to delay any longer and turned to the possibility of looking at other mid-table players.
