Early Saturday morning, a page in North American soccer history was turned. Argentine "King" Mace made his debut for InterMiami, coming on as a substitute after 54 minutes and instantly taking the spotlight. In stoppage time, he even scored a spectacular penalty kick in the last minute to give InterMiami a 2-1 victory over Blue Cross in the North American League Cup, a "Hollywood-style" debut that was as exciting as a movie script.
The North American League Cup was the stage for Mez's first appearance since landing in the U.S., and club owner David Beckham was on hand to cheer on the team, while sports superstars such as LeBron James and Aguero were also in attendance. Mez and Busquets started and changed for the campaign, with Inter Myamy taking the lead just before half-time with a goal from Robert Terrai. The eyes of the world were focused on the 54th minute as the substitutions of Mez and Busquets set the stadium alight.
Mace had a lot of chances to control the ball as a free agent in the midfield. Nonetheless, against the stronger Mexican team, Blue Cross, International Maia Mi was at a standstill for a while. It wasn't until the 65th minute that Uriel Anduana equalized for Blue Cross. Mez was unable to score until the last two minutes of stoppage time, when he won a penalty kick in the penalty area, and he took the iconic shot himself to dramatically win the game for InterMiami.
