In the first round of the quarterfinals, the game was a spectator affair that culminated in both teams showing a strong desire to score goals. Although Adelaide United scored first in the early stages of the game, the Mid Coast Mariners then scored two goals in a row to make a 2-1 comeback.
Under the command of Calvert, Adelaide United were on the offensive as usual, looking to extend their lead, however, I think this was the key to their inconsistency at the back. The Mid Coast Mariners scored two goals in the first half alone, and the Mariners also had a shot hit the post, while Adelaide United's goalkeeper Zugos pulled off a great save.
I expect Adelaide United to come out swinging again in the second half. As always, Kijiji Gwynn will be the central driving force of the team, but I believe my former teammate Clough will be able to step up in this crucial battle. If he can control the ball in midfield, he is well capable of making a positive impact on the team, and I'm equally hopeful that he can win his first major tournament of his career.
If Adelaide United hope to advance to the finals, they will have to improve the performance of their backline, especially to deal with the challenge of the Mariners' powerful striker Jackson Gammings. He has scored 17 goals this season and is one of the best scorers in the AFL. His partner Marko Durio is also in great form with 5 goals in his last 8 games.
However, I think Adelaide United's youngster Ilan Kwanda has a chance to come on at a crucial time and change the game. The 17 year old has not started a game this season, but with his speed, strength and ability to take chances, he has often been able to turn the game upside down after coming on as a substitute, and I believe this game will be no different.
