The Ligue 1 matchup between Montpellier and Lyon kicked off on the 8th of August at Lyon's home field. In the match between Montpellier and Lyon, the two sides contributed a staggering nine goals. Lyon's striker Narcassidi and Montpellier's youngster El Wahi scored four goals each, showing a wonderful "big four" feast. Although Lyon was down 1-4 at one point, in the last 10 minutes of extra time they made a dramatic comeback with a score of 5-4.

Lyon opened the scoring in the 31st minute of the match, but a series of mistakes by the Lyon backline led to four consecutive goals by 20-year-old Elwahy in the 40th, 41st, 53rd and 55th minutes, making the score 1-4. Lyon didn't give up, however, as they scored a goal in the 59th minute, a goal by Lovin in the 70th minute, and another goal in the 82nd minute to make it 4-4. In the 82nd minute, Narcassidi added a second goal to equalize the score at 4-4, and in the final wave of attacks, VAR intervened in stoppage time to award a 12-yard penalty kick. Narcasidi scored in the 100th minute to lead Lyon to a 5-4 comeback.
