A generation of French soccer superstar, Fonteyn, recently completed his legendary life at the age of 89. He shone in the 1958 World Cup, winning the Golden Boot with a 13-goal performance and setting a single World Cup scoring record, a feat that is still unmatched.

Fonteyn's family has confirmed the sad news, but the exact cause of his death has not yet been announced.Born in 1933, he represented France at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, helping the team reach the quarterfinals for the first time. Despite failing to beat a Brazilian team led by Ballon d'Or winner Pele, he scored 13 goals in six matches, not only winning the Golden Boot award, but also remaining the highest goal scorer in a single World Cup to this day. In total, he made 21 appearances for France, scoring 30 goals. Unfortunately, he retired early at the age of 28 due to injury problems and was only involved in one World Cup that year.

At club level, Fonteyn spent most of his career with Reims, winning the Ligue 1 title three times and finishing as runners-up to Real Madrid in the 1959 European final, despite losing out. Since retiring, he has left an indelible mark on the world of soccer, not only as coach of Paris Saint-Germain, France and Morocco.
