A 1-1 draw with Binford resulted in an unexpected loss of two valuable points. The result was largely attributed to the "forgetfulness" of VAR referee Mason Lee, who sparked a huge controversy when he ruled out a goal that should have been offside. This incident not only made the Professional Refereeing Company of the United Kingdom (PGMOL) had to issue an apology statement, but also led to Mason Lee's eventual choice to resign.
PGMOL made an official statement that it has reached an agreement to terminate the contract with Mason Lee, thanking him for his outstanding performance in the past 287 top-level tournaments and wishing him a better career in the future.
The 51-year-old Mason Lee was a senior Premier League referee before transitioning to VAR refereeing at the end of the 2020/21 season. However, shortly after this transition, a serious error on his part put him under immense pressure and he eventually made the decision to resign.
Although Lee Mason has left his post, the two points Arsenal missed out on due to his miscues are irretrievable and could be a key factor in deciding Arsenal's battle with Manchester City for the Premier League title.
