On a sunny Sunday, a Premier League feast was staged, but Tottenham suffered a crushing defeat at home, as Ashton Villa came away with a 2-0 win. Tottenham Hotspur's seventh consecutive Premier League match with at least two goals scored by their opponents, and French goalkeeper Lloris was once again the scapegoat for the loss. Ironically, after the game, Villa goalkeeper Damien Martinez went up to comfort Lloris, which is already two weeks after their World Cup final, once again staged "the same pity" scene.
Under coach Carlo Ancelotti, Tottenham's attacking creativity has looked woefully lacking. Despite having nearly 60% possession, their home offense had only 4 shots on goal, far less than Villa's 13. In the 50th minute, Villa's midfielder Douglas Reus fired a shot from distance that Lloris missed, allowing Onye Kenshi to cross for Beandia to score. In the 73rd minute, Douglas-Reis again helped Villa seal the 2-0 win with a well placed wedge.
Argentina's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Damien Martinez, who came on as a substitute this campaign, again consoled World Runner-up France goalkeeper Loris at the end of the match, recreating a touching scene from the Qatar World Cup. Tottenham Hotspur leader Carlo Ancelotti said after the game: "I have said many times that Tottenham's last season (in the top four) was a miracle because we only played one game and 12 or 13 of our starters stayed fit. People said before the season that Tottenham were favorites for the title and I think that's ridiculous, I know Tottenham still need time to build themselves up."
