A surprise ban on alcohol during this year's World Cup has provoked widespread protests from fans. During the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador in the early hours of Monday morning (21) in Hong Kong, a large number of Ecuadorian fans chanted in unison on the pitch, "We want beer!" Outside the stadium, numerous fans even found ways to try to bring in alcohol.
One fan suggested using a special Coke sleeve to put a beer can over it, so that the security guards would mistake it for a soft drink and thus bring it into the venue easily. If that doesn't work, some plan to use sports water bags to disguise the alcohol as sports attire, thus reducing the security guards' alertness.
More creatively, some people have suggested drilling holes in watermelons and inserting wine bottles into them, so that the pulp can absorb the wine and make "wine watermelons", which will be difficult for security personnel to guard against. However, once these unique entry techniques are publicized, the authorities are likely to be more stringent in checking the items carried by those entering the event.
