In the early hours of Sunday morning (31st), Liverpool and city rivals Manchester City played a Community Shield match, and the Reds finally started the new season with a victory. However, behind the joy of this victory, there seems to be an ominous omen. There is a "Community Shield curse" in English soccer, which means that the team that wins the Community Shield tends to lose the Premier League title that season.
Looking back in history, of the last 11 Community Shield winners since 2011/12, only Manchester City in 2018/19 were able to successfully defend their Premier League title.
It's worth noting that Liverpool lost to Manchester City in the Community Shield before winning the Premier League for the first time in 2019/20, but that didn't trigger the 'curse'. City had failed to win the Community Shield in the previous two editions, but unexpectedly won the Premier League title for the second time in a row. Now that City have lost again in the Community Shield, could this be a sign that they can break the curse and achieve a third consecutive Premier League title?
