Chelsea's defeat in the EFL Cup was followed by unprecedented challenges for the club. Abramovich's failure to ensure that all proceeds from the sale of Chelsea would be used for charity and the possibility of diverting the funds through other means has alerted the British government. Not only could the Chelsea deal be put on hold, but even worse, the club could face the serious consequences of being disqualified from the Premier League and kicked out of the UEFA Europa League.

Earlier this month, Chelsea's sergeant announced that it had reached an agreement with a consortium led by wealthy American businessman Todd Boehly for a deal worth up to 2.5 billion pounds, which, with follow-on investment, would bring the total topping 4.25 billion pounds. However, recent news suggests that the UK government has questioned Abu's commitment to use the proceeds for charity.

The British government is said to have two major doubts about the deal: the destination of the funds from the sale proceeds, and the legal security of the proceeds for Ukrainian charities. They are also concerned that some 2 billion euros could flow into Abu and Russian-related accounts after the deal is completed.

If Chelsea fails to complete the sale within the deadline, not only will they lose their Premier League status and be expelled from the UEFA Europa League, the team may even be forced to disband.
