Tottenham Hotspur hosted Liverpool in the 17th round of the Premier League at dawn and lost 3-6. After the match, Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp gave his insight into the ups and downs of the game.
Jamie Redknapp stated in no uncertain terms, "Even though I don't expect Tottenham to lift the Premier League crown, it's hard to believe that the way it was played could bring any glory." He further emphasized that no matter how tactically astute one is, respecting the opponent and building a solid defense are the cornerstones of winning, which Tottenham clearly failed to do in this match.
Comparing Tottenham's on-field performance to the powerhouses of yesteryear, Redknapp said, "The scene is almost reminiscent of Kevin Keegan's philosophy of soccer, and a similar team would have to mention Liverpool under Rodgers, when the scorelines were often 6-3, 5-4, and always ended up sadly missing out on the title." He hinted that despite the fact that these teams were quite potent at the attacking end, the holes in the defense became a chasm that they struggled to cross.
Speaking about Tottenham's new manager Postecoglou, Redknapp said, "It's not a matter of style to respect the opponent and stick to the defense. Assuming the players are in good shape, Postecoglou will adjust if he wants to try some new tactics, which every new coach does." He recognized Postecoglou's unique approach and praised him for his brilliant journey from Australia and across the British Isles.
However, Redknapp was also blunt: "You have to have your own uniqueness, otherwise it's hard to stand out. But judging from this game, Tottenham's shortcomings at the defensive end were exposed. Even with the best squad, if there are holes in the defense, it is difficult to achieve the desired results."
