In an encounter on the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was not shy about praising Welbeck's current brilliant form. He was outspoken in stating that Welbeck has outperformed all the strikers in United's squad and is convinced that United's decision to release him in the first place was a mistake. In the face of Neville's impassioned defense, Roy Keane offered a very different view, seriously questioning Neville's opinion and stressing that even if a player leaves in a blaze of glory, it cannot simply be attributed to the fact that they should have stayed at United in the first place.

Neville was not swayed by Keane's rebuttal, and is convinced that Welbeck would be an essential part of a United squad that could be expanded to 24 men with the intention of retaining five or six strikers. But Keane had reservations, arguing that players may have a spring in their step outside of United, but that it is not enough to prove that they have what it takes to make it at the top level of the game. In a debate sparked by two of United's former superstars, the two sides have gone head to head, each with their own version of the story.
