Speaking on the Tightrope to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's extraordinary performances of late. He noted that Welbeck's athleticism has significantly surpassed that of all the strikers in United's squad, and is convinced that United made a mistake in letting go of the player. In response, Roy Keane offered a very different viewpoint, seriously questioning Neville and pointing out that the success of a player's performances since leaving the club is not a good enough reason to keep them in the first place.
Neville has not backed down and is adamant that if United are able to expand to a 24-man squad and plan to keep five or six strikers, Welbeck will undoubtedly be an integral part of that. But Keane is not convinced, believing that players may have had great careers after leaving United, but that does not equate to them having the ability to play at a top club like United. The debate, sparked by the two former United stars, heated up with each side arguing its own side of the story.
