On the Stick to Football podcast Nitro, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent performances which have been like a transformation. He was outspoken in stating that Welbeck's form has been far better than that of any other striker in United's squad, and expressed his deep regret that United had missed out on the striker. In response, Roy Keane took the opposite view, telling Neville with a straight face that the fact that a player leaves in glittering splendor is not a good enough reason to keep him in the first place.
Neville was not swayed by Keane's rebuttal and was convinced that Welbeck would be a key part of United's squad if they were to expand to 24 men with the intention of retaining five or six strikers. Keane was not convinced, suggesting that players may blossom outside of United, but that does not equate to them peaking at United and adapting to the intense competition at the club.
The two former Manchester United superstars had a war of words on the subject, with each arguing their own point of view, and the debate became more and more heated.
