In a lively discussion on the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent excellent performances. He pointed out that Welbeck's form has surpassed that of all the strikers currently in United's squad, and is convinced that United made the wrong decision in failing to keep hold of the brilliant striker. However, Roy Keane takes a very different view, casting doubt on Neville's argument and bluntly countering that just because a player has been brilliant since leaving the club does not infer that they should have stayed at United in the first place.

In the face of Keane's rebuttal, Neville remained steadfast in defending his position that if United were to maintain a 24-man squad with the intention of retaining five or six top strikers, Welbeck would undoubtedly be a key member of the line-up. Keane, on the other hand, is not convinced and believes that although players may have a second spring in their career after leaving United, it is not enough to prove that they are good enough for the high bar and demanding standards set by United. The debate over whether a player should stay or go was a heated exchange of views between the two former United stars.
