Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent stunning performances. He pointed out that Welbeck's current form clearly surpasses that of any striker in United's squad, and was convinced that United had missed out on the striker's talents. In the face of Neville's staunch stance, Roy Keane gave a very different response, seriously questioning Neville's view that a player's exceptional performances since leaving the club do not directly infer that they should have stayed.

Neville was not swayed by Keane's rebuttal, and was convinced that if United's squad was expanded to 24 men, with the intention of retaining five or six strikers, Welbeck would undoubtedly be the man for the job. However, Keane disagreed, emphasizing that just because a player may have achieved great things after leaving United does not mean that they have the ability to adapt in the demanding environment that United demands. The two United legends engaged in a heated debate on the subject, each defending their position.
