On the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent hot competitive performances. Neville said that Welbeck's form has surpassed that of any striker in United's squad and is convinced that United made a mistake in releasing him. Roy Keane, on the other hand, was grim in his rebuttal, seriously pointing out that it is not easy to conclude that a player should have been retained in the first place just based on the fleeting moments after they left the club.
Neville has not backed down and firmly believes that if United expand to a 24-man squad and plan to keep five or six strikers, Welbeck will undoubtedly be a key player. Keane, on the other hand, disagreed, pointing out that just because a player has left the club and gone on to great things does not mean that they have the ability to adapt to United's exacting standards and demands. The two former United stars had a heated war of words on the subject, each arguing their own point of view.
