Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville praised Welbeck's recent performances, saying that Welbeck's form has surpassed that of all the strikers in United's squad and that he firmly believes that United made a mistake in releasing him. Roy Keane looked serious and determined in the face of Neville's comments, retorting that just because a player leaves the club and performs well, it doesn't mean they should have been kept in the first place.

Neville was not swayed by Keane's counter-argument and is convinced that if United's squad expands to 24 and plans to retain five or six strikers, Welbeck is undoubtedly one of the key players who must stay. Keane, however, took exception to this, pointing out that just because players find success outside of United does not mean that they are able to meet the demanding standards and requirements of the club. The debate over the future layout of United's forward line has intensified with the two United legends each arguing their own point of view.
