On the Tight Football Podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's amazing recent form. He pointed out that Welbeck's athleticism has significantly surpassed that of all of United's current strikers, and was convinced that United had made a mistake in letting go of the player in the first place. In response, Roy Keane offered a pointed rebuttal, squarely telling Neville that just because a player has been impressive since leaving the club doesn't mean they shouldn't have stayed in the first place.

Neville has not wavered in his conviction that if United can expand to a 24-man squad with the intention of retaining five or six strikers, Welbeck will undoubtedly be a key part of the line-up. Keane, on the other hand, disagreed, emphasizing that players may indeed springboard their careers outside of United, but that is not enough to prove that they would have been good enough to cope with United's exacting standards. The two former Red Devils stars have gone toe-to-toe in this debate over the retention and departure of United players.
