Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast show, Gary Neville was keen to praise Welbeck's recent stunning performances. Neville stated that Welbeck has been on fire, clearly outperforming the other strikers in the United squad, and is convinced that United made a mistake in letting the goalscorer go in the first place. In the face of Neville's strong views, Roy Keane took a very different view and countered Neville squarely, arguing that if a player has excelled since leaving the club, it doesn't simply follow that they should have stayed at United in the first place.

Neville was unimpressed, believing that Welbeck would be a key part of a United squad that would be expanded to 24 men with the intention of retaining five or six strikers. However, Keane was not convinced, pointing out that players may have a spring in their step when they leave United, but that doesn't necessarily mean they have what it takes to adapt to their demanding standards and requirements. The two United legends were at loggerheads in the debate over the players' stay and departure.
