On the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent performances. He pointed out that Welbeck has clearly outperformed the other strikers in United's squad and was convinced that United's initial release was a blunder. In the face of Neville's views, Roy Keane offered a very different perspective, squarely contradicting Neville by pointing out that you can't conclude that players should have stayed in the first place based solely on their impressive performances since leaving the club. Neville did not back down and was convinced that if United had a 24-man squad and planned to keep five or six strikers, Welbeck would undoubtedly be an integral part of the line-up. Keane, however, had his reservations, emphasizing that just because a player has had a successful career after leaving the club is gratifying, it doesn't mean they are good enough for the high-pressure environment at United. The two former United stars engaged in a tit-for-tat debate on the subject, each defending his position.
