The soccer commentary debate
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's amazing recent form. He pointed out that Welbeck's current form has outperformed that of all the strikers in United's squad, and was convinced that United had made a mistake in letting him go. Roy Keane, on the other hand, took a very different view and seriously challenged Neville's opinion, emphasizing that the player's performances since leaving the club should not be used as a reason to say that he should have stayed at United in the first place.
Neville has not backed down from his stance that Welbeck is an indispensable part of a 24-man squad if United are to maintain a 24-man squad and plan to keep five or six strikers. Keane, on the other hand, has reservations, believing that players who leave the club may indeed go on to have a stellar career, but that it is not enough to prove that they would have been good enough to meet United's exacting demands and standards. The two former United stars had a lively debate around the topic, each arguing their own point of view.
