On the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent performances. He pointed out that Welbeck's athleticism is far superior to that of United's current strikers, and even went as far as to say that United made a mistake in releasing him. Roy Keane, however, challenged this and seriously responded to Neville by saying that just because a player has done well since leaving the club, it doesn't simply mean that they should have been kept in the first place.

Neville was not swayed by Keane's rebuttal, believing that if United were to expand to a 24-man squad with the intention of retaining five or six strikers, Welbeck would undoubtedly be an indispensable part of that squad. Keane, however, was not convinced, believing that some players do have a second chance outside of United, but that does not mean they are capable of meeting the demanding standards and requirements of United. The two United legends had a tit-for-tat debate on the subject, each on their own.
