In an interview with Sports Weekly on March 15, Wu Lei provided insight into the current state of the Chinese Super League and the evolution of his personal role over the years.

When asked about the current competitive state of the Chinese Super League, Wu Lei said that in terms of technology, tactics and spectacle, the Chinese Super League can no longer be compared to the level of 2017. In those two years, the enthusiasm and excitement of the game was far more than now. At that time, the Chinese Super League teams had many powerful foreign aiders, and their joining made the rhythm of training and games very different. Nowadays, the overall level of foreign aid has declined, and the growth environment for local young players is not as good as it should be.

How has the decline in the overall standard of the Premier League affected domestic players? Has your role changed with it?

In fact, my role has been evolving since I first played in the Chinese Super League in 2013. Back then, the team didn't have many foreigners, and I worked in tandem with them, taking on more tasks and responsibilities. With the arrival of Konka, Hulk and Oscar, my role in front of goal has changed significantly, mainly to support them. After my experience in Europe and my return to Hong Kong, my role has shifted again, not only to take on more match responsibilities, but also to mentor my younger teammates. As I get older, I am also actively seeking changes and trying out new roles and positions. At present, there are many newcomers in the Hong Kong team, and it is my duty to help them and guide them.

Next, let's talk about the national team. In last year's World Qualifier, you contributed a crucial equalizer away from home in Thailand. The image of you diving for the ball and crashing into the goalpost is still unforgettable.

As a striker, that's the most basic responsibility! The ball is there and if you have a chance to touch it, you have to give it your all (to shoot it in). At the time, I thought the ball would touch and score by itself, I had no other thoughts in my head... It's the striker's instinct and what I have to do for the team.
