In a marquee matchup in the recently concluded Europa League group stage, Austria defeated North Macedonia 3-1. Shanghai Harbour's Austrian striker, Arnautovic, sparked widespread concern and controversy with his remarks to a North Macedonian player during his celebration after scoring a goal.

Towards the end of the match, Arnautovic sealed the win for Austria with a solo goal, but immediately after, in his excitement, he made a provocative move towards North Macedonia defender Alioski, which seemed to be related to the rough behavior of the opposing player in defense earlier.

Sources claimed that Arnautovic may have insulted Alioski's Albanian mother during the clash, which has led to a racial discrimination controversy. Although Arnautovic's exact comments were not definitively confirmed by the officials, Austria's captain, Alaba, immediately stepped forward to stop him and calm him down, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

Media in North Macedonia have condemned Arnautovic's behavior and called for his ban. UEFA has always had zero tolerance for racist behavior. Tonight BST, Arnautovic took to social media to clarify his words and actions. He wrote: "Yesterday, in the heat of the moment, I said something over the top, for which I am deeply sorry, especially to my friends in North Macedonia and Albania." Arnautovic emphasized, "I want to make it clear that I am not a racist! I have friends in many countries and I advocate cultural diversity. Anyone who knows me knows this." He mentioned that his parents are from Serbia and Austria, and that he has dual citizenship, ultimately choosing the Austrian team. Arnautovic denied being a racist and gave examples of the good relationship he has developed with his head coach and teammates from Croatia at Seaport. He is also good friends with other former southern region foreigners in the Chinese Super League, who meet up in Shanghai during the league and on vacation.
