Guangzhou City FC announced today that Colombian wing speedster Caldona has officially joined the team's camp and both sides will sign a three-year contract. Meanwhile, Caldona will take over the No. 7 gown left behind by former captain Xavi.
The 26-year-old Caldona, born on January 9, 1995 in Cali, Colombia's third-largest city, doesn't stand a dominant height of 170cm, but his precise handling with his right foot makes him an excellent winger.
Caldona began his soccer career in his hometown of Cali Sport, where he gained experience in the game with a long history of showcasing his talents in the Colombian professional leagues and briefly straddling Liga MX and Mexico's Primera División.
Since 2019, the 24-year-old Caldona has been making a name for himself in South America's top flight. In January 2019, he moved from Ceará in the Barcelona Liga to Sporting Pasto in the Colombian Liga, contributing two goals and one assist in 16 appearances in all competitions in just six months. In the summer of the same year, Caldona moved to Leon in Mexico's Primera Division, appearing in nine games and dishing out one assist. In July 2020, he returned to Colombia once again, joining Caldas XI.
Caldona is not only a winger, but can also play in the forward position. His playing style is similar to that of a modern soccer side forward, and fits perfectly into Guangzhou City's tactical system. He combines the skills of a wingback and a forward, with excellent dribbling skills and outstanding organization. In addition, he is very active in front of the field and is good at set-pieces, which can break the deadlock for the team at critical moments.
