It was only in the 28th minute that Chukwueze's clever cross from the right was met by Onyedika, who fired a fine shot to give Nigeria a quick lead, making the score 1-0. Benin didn't give up on their deficit and quickly adjusted their strategy in order to turn the game around.
The turning point came in the 37th minute. Jordel Dossou made a breakaway in front of the goal and calmly pushed the ball into the goal to equalize the score at 1-1. This goal not only boosted Benin's morale, but also made the game even more tense and intense.
Towards the end of the first half, Benin made more efforts. In the 45th minute, Olaitan took a corner kick from the right side and Mounié scored with his right foot to put Benin back in front, 2-1. This goal not only helped Benin to take the lead, but also made the victory glimmer in front of their eyes.
The match resumed with both teams giving their best. Nigeria tried to turn the tide by stepping up their attack, however, Benin defended well and managed to withstand the Nigerian onslaught with excellent teamwork and perseverance.
Although Nigeria had many chances in the second half, Olawoyin's cross from the right in the 85th minute was cleverly cleared off the line by a defender, while Onuachu's header in the 86th minute was powerful but went over the crossbar. Nonetheless, these attacks showed that the Nigerian team was at full strength in the second half.
