Speaking on the Stay on the Pitch podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's remarkable performances of late. He pointed out that Welbeck's current form has surpassed that of any striker in United's squad, and even asserted that United's decision to let go of the outstanding striker was too hasty. In the face of Neville's strong views, Roy Keane took a very different stance, seriously questioning Neville and stating that even if a player has been outstanding since leaving the club, it is not a good enough reason why he should have been kept in the first place.

Neville is not swayed by this and is convinced that Welbeck will be an integral part of United's squad if they expand to 24 men and plan to keep five or six strikers. However, Keane disagreed, believing that just because a player had been successful outside of United did not mean they had the ability to adapt to their demanding standards and requirements. The two former United stars then engaged in a heated debate on the subject, each sticking to their own stance.
