Manchester United Football Club

An agreement has been reached with Newcastle to officially appoint Dan Ashworth as the club's sporting director.

A failure to agree on a compensation fee between Manchester United and Newcastle led to a delay in the deal for Ashworth to join the club. However, after over four months of gardening leave, Ashworth's transfer has now been approved.

Ashworth, 53, will immediately take on a key role in United's new structure, with responsibility for the club's soccer performance, recruitment and operations. He will report directly to Sir Dave Brailsford, while technical director Jason Wilcox will report to him.

Ashworth plans to take Newcastle to a tribunal to facilitate his jump, and United have offered their support and promised to pay his legal fees.

The appointment marks another important personnel change in United's new management structure. Omar Berrada will join United as chief executive from Manchester City later this month, while Wilcox's position as technical director was confirmed in April.
