Barcelona, the former powerhouse of La Liga, has been in deep financial trouble in recent years and has had to shift its strategy to actively seek to sign free agents in a bid to cut down on its exorbitant transfer fees. According to Spain's Daily Sport newspaper, Barcelona has set its sights on 26-year-old Nigerian midfielder Nididi of English Championship rivals Leicester City, and plans to take him under its wing for zero transfer fee when his contract expires next summer.

Lister City were unlucky to be relegated to the Championship this season, and the team's key players have left the club, with central midfielder James Maddison joining Tottenham Hotspur and Javi Bannis moving to Newcastle. Despite being relegated with the team, Nididi opted to refuse to extend his contract, and it is widely speculated that he intends to seek better development opportunities after his contract expires. As Nididi will be available to negotiate with other clubs from January next year, Barcelona have begun actively planning to try to include him in their squad.
