On the soccer field, the players are usually the nonchalant ones, however, as ordinary people with flesh and blood, the judges in black sometimes get angry, and Jerk has compiled a list of some of the referee's out-of-character moments on the soccer field for you...
Flying kicks from the Kuwaiti referee
It was a Kuwaiti Super League match in 2013 and the opposing teams were Al Nasr and Al Arabi. Trouble arose when referee Saad Al Fadly awarded the visitors a penalty kick. The home team was so unhappy with the decision that the players surrounded the referee and started pushing and shoving amidst a mountain of cheering fans.
Al Fadly, who was backing up, was seen landing a retaliatory left hook that knocked down Al Nasr player Abdulaziz Faraj. Faraji, who had slowed down on the ground, stood up and tried to make a statement, only for the referee to throw another flying kick while raising the red card high...
The visitors scored a penalty, but the hosts had a problem when they kicked off in the center circle. No. 9 Enazi, who was determined to stand up for his teammates, kicked the ball to the referee, and Al-Fadly showed a red card to the "murderer" after being smothered by the ball. The referee became famous for his aggressiveness.
The referee who raged against **barrel Di Canio
After a 1999 match between West Ham United and Bucharest Stars, Di Canio claimed the referee had used insulting language towards him. The hot-tempered Italian said referee Larsson twice called him a "s**t" and that the referee should have been replaced before he was sent off. Hammers boss Redknapp Sr. backed his disciple, however Larsson made a clarification, "I didn't say get up, **, I said get the f**k up"...
McDean of Portugal
In a Portuguese League Cup match between Porto and Moreirense in January this year, Porto's Danilo was already carrying a yellow card. Suddenly, referee Gortinho (dubbed by the British media as Portugal's McDean) bumped into Danilo as he jogged back, and the startled referee, feeling that his dignity had been insulted, immediately showed the latter a second yellow card, leaving Danilo in a state of confusion.
After the game, Danilo posted on social media, "I've watched the video a hundred and one times and I still don't see what I did wrong."
Gortinho didn't seem to be relieved, showing a second yellow for a less serious foul on Porto's Brahimi six minutes later as Porto, playing with nine men, eventually lost 0-1.
Tevez in the name of the people.
In 2005, Corinthians' relationship with referees was so tense that they even hired a camera crew specifically to film the referee's performance in their match against Paranhens, who were not to be outdone and brought recording equipment as a response.
Following Corinthians' 2-3 loss to Sao Paulo, Tevez accused referee Edilson Carvalho of swearing at him and Dominguez.
Carvalho was later banned for life after admitting he took black money from a gambling syndicate, and the 11 fights he blew were voided and rematched.
Atkinson teaches Jagielka how to play defense
Everton lost to Manchester City in a League Cup semi-final in 2016. After the match Toffees captain Jagielka slammed referee Atkinson for his attitude.
For City's crucial second goal, Sterling had the ball off the line before assisting De Bruyne, and Atkinson didn't see it.
Jagielka said he was trying to alert the referee, but Atkinson was too arrogant, "He told me your defense was fantastic! I think sometimes they are so arrogant that they don't want to admit that they can make mistakes."
But then former referee Ball immediately defended his counterpart, "Atkinson is one of the most humble people I've ever met."
Gascoigne's hilarious miscast
In December 1995, during a Scottish League match between Rangers and Hibernian, Paul Gascoigne returned a yellow card that the referee had inadvertently dropped to the ground with a card out of play, a gesture that was meant to be funny over the Christmas period, but which attracted a yellow card for Gazza.
Even the opponents looked a little bit confused, as Hibernian's Tortolano asked referee-in-charge Dougie Smith, "You give him a yellow card for this too?" Smith replied, "He could have played any one of you, but not me."
