In the penalty shootout between England and Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the UEFA European Cup, England eliminated their opponents with a perfect performance of hitting all five penalties and successfully advanced to the semifinals. After the match, Foden, a young talent in the England team, expressed his views on the penalty shootout in an interview with talksport, and was impressed by teammate Ivan Toni's penalty kick.
When asked which penalty made the biggest impression on him, Foden didn't hesitate to mention Ivan Toni's goal. He exclaimed, "Ivan Toni's penalty was crazy. He never looks at the ball and yet he manages to exert such an amazing amount of power to put the ball firmly in the goal. I couldn't believe how he did it, it really was an incredible goal."
However, it is worth noting that Foden was not able to take the penalty himself in this tense and exciting penalty shootout. Due to tactical adjustments, he was replaced before the penalty shootout. For this decision, Foden showed great professionalism and team spirit. He said, "If I was still on the field, I would have taken the penalty, but I also understand that there are some players in the team who have taken penalties regularly at their clubs and they are more experienced in this area. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to have them take penalties and I respect the manager's decision."
Foden elaborated further, "I think it's a confidence thing. If you believe you can score goals, then you definitely qualify as a penalty taker. Of course, if I had stayed on the field, I wouldn't have minded taking a penalty, but I'm also aware that there are probably fitter and better penalty takers in the team than me."
